Santander is one of the most beautiful cities all over Spain . Its 2-km long beach has been a very important factor of the huge tourist relevance of the city. Santander ’s waterfront is the focus of life in the town. Here you can find a marvellous promenade and lively harbour. Yet within minutes of the town centre there are beautiful beaches easily accessible on foot, by car or by bus. Its cathedral is Santander ’s oldest building. It is set in the city centre where there are also several museums such as “Menendez y Pelayo” House-Museum, the “ Local Art Museum ”, the “Prehistorical” Museum, which is one of the most important in the world, and the “Maritime” Museum.
In the surroundings of the city we find other interesting resorts to visit like Somo, Pedreña, Liencres, Soto de la Marina, Mogro and Miengo.
The region of Cantabria is full of rivers, mountains and miles of coastline. That’s an awful lot of sand and an awful lot of sea!
Along the east coast you will find many towns like Castro Urdiales one of the nicest places in the region where you can visit its Gothic Church and its beautiful bay.
Nearby the visitors arrive in Laredo an important tourist centre with long sandy beaches.
On the other side of the bay the visitant can find Santoña a beautiful fisherman village with a wonderful maritime promenade and a nautical harbour. It must also be mentioned the typical Carnival of Santoña, considered one of the best ones in the north of Spain. On the west coast of Cantabria, we will see many other places as marvellous as the ones mentioned above. In the mouth of the river Besaya is set Suances where you can gaze wonderful views.
30 km far away from Santander is placed Santillana del Mar a very historical interesting city with a Romanesque collegiate church. 2 km to the south of this town are placed the Prehistorical “ Altamira Caves ” and a recent replica which make the visit available to everyone.
If we go on travelling along the west coast we will find Comillas, a village with sandy beaches and wonderful paysage, which is important for its marvellous buildings like the neogothic-Art Nouveau “Pontifical University”, the “Sobrellano” palace and the “Capricho” made by the famous Catalan architect Antonio Gaudí.
Finally, San Vicente de la Barquera, a beautiful city where the tourist can visit its 14-arch bridge and its combined historical, artistic and monumental area.
After visiting the entire coast of Cantabria from east to west we go to the inlands of the region with lots of towns located between mountains and rivers with an unequalled beauty.
It must be mentioned the great variety of places close by the majestic “Picos de Europa”.
In the south of the county we find the sky resort Alto Campoo and nearby the natural park of Saja.
